Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum, MD, PhD

Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum is the Director-General of the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Lovanium (now University of Kinshasa) in 1969, and his Ph.D. in Virology from the University of Leuven, Belgium, in 1973.

In 1976, Dr. Muyembe investigated the first Ebola outbreak in Congo and draw the blood samples to discover a new virus. He led the research for Ansuvimab which has been successfully tested as a treatment for Ebola and approved for use in 2019. Owing to his achievements in Ebola research and outbreak response, he received the Royal Society Africa Prize in 2014 and the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize in 2019.

Within Lecturio, Dr. Muyembe-Tamfum shares his knowledge of infectious diseases, specifically Ebola and Mpox.
