  1. Receptor tyrosine kinase pathway
  2. G protein–coupled receptor pathway
  3. Steroid hormone pathway
  4. Serine kinase pathway
  5. Receptor phosphatase pathway
  1. Most second messenger systems fall into either receptor tyrosine kinase or G protein–coupled receptor pathways.
  2. RTK pathways are generally involved in the regulation of normal cell processes.
  3. G protein–coupled pathways are generally involved in mediating structural and metabolic changes.
  4. They rarely involve multi-step signal amplification.
  5. They are typically steroid hormone receptors.
