Metabolic control refers to the mechanisms that a multicellular organism uses to encounter the needs put upon it. It occurs at the cellular level, and it can be initiated by an external stimulus or by internal signaling. A prominent example is the fight-or-flight response, which depends on optimization of cell-level and system-level functions to increase energy output and the likelihood of survival.
In this course, the student will be introduced to the main control mechanisms of enzyme activity, including allosterism, covalent modification, and control of enzyme synthesis. Additionally, the role of the liver in metabolism, hormonal control, glycogen, and fat metabolism will be discussed.
For optimal comprehension, the student will be required to be familiar with the basic notions of molecular and cellular biology and the biochemistry of nucleic acids.
