Concept: Sleep

Von Rhonda Lawes, PhD, RN

Sleep is a natural, cyclic physiological process involving shifts in neurologic, metabolic, and endocrine activity that serves a restorative function essential to tissue repair, immune function, and hormonal regulation.

This course covers sleep physiology and staging (non-REM and REM cycles), the continuum from restorative sleep to chronic sleep disorders, risk factors and health disparities, and nursing assessment techniques. Moreover, the content covers clinical management, including sleep hygiene, pharmacologic considerations such as melatonin, and CPAP adherence support. Nursing students will gain the skills to assess sleep as shaped by a patient's circumstances and to intervene independently at the bedside.
