Orientation to Concepts

Von Rhonda Lawes, PhD, RN

Concept-based learning in nursing is an approach to organizing clinical knowledge around underlying mechanisms and patterns, such as inflammation or perfusion, rather than memorizing isolated facts about individual diseases and drugs.

The course covers the rationale for concept-based learning versus memorization, the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model and its six-step reasoning process, and strategies for engaging with concept resources through hooks, mechanisms, and transfer exercises. Nursing students will build a transferable map of clinical reasoning that supports NCLEX success and real-world patient care.
