Concept: Elimination

Von Rhonda Lawes, PhD, RN

Elimination is the physiological process by which the body excretes metabolic waste through the urinary system (kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra) and the bowel (lower digestive tract).

This course covers urinary retention and opioid-induced constipation in postoperative patients, the pharmacology of laxatives and bladder medications, nephrotoxic drug considerations, and the application of clinical judgment to prioritize simultaneous elimination problems. Nursing students will gain the assessment skills and clinical reasoning needed to identify and intervene on elimination complications before they cause patient harm.
