Concept: Clotting

Von Rhonda Lawes, PhD, RN

Clotting is a physiological process in which blood is converted from a liquid to a semi-solid gel to stop blood flow at a site of vascular injury.

The coagulation cascade and hemostasis mechanisms are examined alongside the clinical recognition of both excessive and deficient clotting and the drug classes used to manage each. Nursing students gain the foundational reasoning to identify patients at risk and interpret lab values such as PT/INR, PTT, and platelet count in clinical context.
