Community Medicine (MBBS India)

Von Jessica Reuter, Raywat Deonandan, PhD, Georgina Cornwall, PhD u.a.

Community medicine is the branch of medicine that focuses on the application of community-based interventions, usually via governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations, to improve the overall health of the community. In this course, the student will be given a tour through the organization and dynamics of the public health sector, the measures and indicators used to measure health in a particular community, the most common interventions used to improve the health of populations and the interpersonal skills required to reach cooperation with patients and other stakeholders. For optimal comprehension, the student should be familiarized with the core knowledge, skills and gold standard of care in the major medical specialties. The importance of public health measures cannot be understated. Everything from screening campaigns to emergency response planning require the input of doctors to ensure that the infrastructural machinery is well-equipped. In the same vein, patient education and cooperation are key to ensure that populations at large adhere to medical recommendations.
