Students will examine the mechanisms of cellular aging, including oxidative stress, telomere shortening, and genomic instability, and their influence on organ system function. Major body systems will be studied to identify age-related structural and functional alterations, their clinical manifestations, and the implications for diagnosis and management.
A special focus will be given to the urinary and genitourinary systems, exploring changes in renal filtration, bladder capacity, and sexual function, alongside the increased prevalence of urinary incontinence, infections, and prostate or pelvic disorders in older adults. Students will learn to differentiate normal age-related changes from pathophysiologic conditions, applying clinical reasoning to optimize assessment, prevention, and intervention strategies.
