Head and Neck Anatomy with Dr. Canby

Head and Neck Anatomy with Dr. Canby

by Craig Canby, PhD

The head contains the most prominent structures of the central nervous system (e.g., the brain and cerebellum), as well as the organs of the senses and the point of entry for the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. The neck is the region that provides passage to the vascular, respiratory, and digestive structures that functionally connect the head to the thorax and abdomen.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the neck and all the structures it envelops, the main vascular supply to the contents of the cranial vault, the orbit and its contents, the teeth and how they are developed, the muscles of the face, the cartilaginous structures of the face, and the external, middle and inner ear.

For optimal comprehension, the student is encouraged to correlate the lessons of this course with their counterparts in histology, physiology, and embryology.

Basics/clinical correlation: In clinical practice, trauma and infectious conditions (e.g., abscesses) that affect the head and neck are considered of great importance and severity. They are cared for very carefully because of their anatomical proximity to the brain and/or because the airway or major vascular structures can be compromised.

Relevance for medical career: It’s key for the general physician and nurse practitioner to be familiar with the anatomy of the head and neck in order to have an adequate understanding of the conditions that could affect the structures they encompass.
