Special Senses

by Darren Salmi, MD, MS

Understanding the special senses is essential for medical students as it encompasses the intricate structures involved in vision, hearing, and balance. Students will study the anatomy of the bony orbit, which houses the eyeball and its associated structures. The optic nerve transmits visual information from the retina to the brain. Students will explore the anatomy and function of the extraocular muscles responsible for eye movements. Understanding the blood supply, such as the ophthalmic artery and the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins, is important for diagnosing and managing orbital vascular disorders. Students will examine the anatomical structures within the orbit, including the lacrimal gland, lacrimal sac, and nasolacrimal duct. Students will explore the anatomy and function of the eyelids, including their muscles, glands, and protective role. Knowledge of the lacrimal apparatus, including the tear production and drainage system, is essential for diagnosing and managing conditions such as blepharitis and lacrimal duct obstructions. Mastery of the special senses is crucial for success in the USMLE, as questions related to vision, hearing, and balance are frequently encountered.
