Menopause

by Lynae Brayboy, MD

Menopause is a routine, nonpathologic condition involving the permanent cessation of menses for at least 12 months. Menopause occurs in all menstruating women due to nonpathologic estrogen deficiency, with the median age of onset being 51. Although most women experience vasomotor symptoms, menopause can have effects on multiple organs, such as the cardiovascular and urogenital systems. There are various treatment modalities available, with specific considerations related to comorbidities like osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and cancer risk, among others.
