Control disorders, as defined in this course, may encompass a broad spectrum of psychological pathology. For example, substance addiction, a disorder characterized by a compulsion to continue using a substance despite demonstrated negative consequences, is extremely common. There are also non-substance or behavioral disorders, including addictions to food, gambling, mobile phones, as well as eating disorders. Other disorders covered in this course include trichotillomania and kleptomania, both of which are extremely debilitating to patients and families, though they may not be appropriately recognized as psychological disorders until late in life.
