Brain and Nervous System—Anatomy

by Craig Canby, PhD

The central nervous system (CNS) is a marvel as well as a mystery. Although we understand that it harbors all of the executive and autonomic functions needed to regulate the human body, we are still no closer to understanding the origins of consciousness. Nevertheless, the anatomy of the nervous system can be a good place to begin, allowing one to understand how its architecture is arranged and meant to interact.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the anatomy of the brain, delving into the intricacies of the cerebral cortex, limbic system, basal ganglia, and more. The discussion will then tturn to the cerebellum and, finally, the spinal cord.

For optimal comprehension, the student is encouraged to correlate the lessons of this course with their counterparts in histology, physiology, and embryology.

A solid grasp of any neurological condition hinges on a good understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the brain, cerebellum, and spinal cord. The specialties of neurology, psychiatry, psychology, and the rest of the medical field, to a certain extent, rely on this fact.

A competent physician and nurse are required to have good understanding of the fundamentals relating to the anatomy and physiology of the CNS in order to understand the multitude of conditions that can affect its structures (e.g., meningitis, traumatic brain injury, tumors) and functions (e.g., dementia, delirium).
