This presentation is an introduction to Health
Promotion and Health Promotion Frameworks.
00:08
Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to
increase control over and to improve their own health.
00:15
Health Promotion frameworks, therefore,
guide nurses and other health professionals
to understand and address factors
that contribute to health outcomes.
00:24
Now, here we have George.
00:26
George is a public health
nurse, and like all of us
he strives to keep his patients
and his populations healthy.
00:33
Mostly, we do this through disease prevention or
treating diseases, but health promotion is different.
00:38
We're not preventing disease from happening and
we're not treating it unless it already happens.
00:42
What we're doing with health
promotion is empowering individuals,
giving them the tools that they need
to take control over their health,
giving them the tools they need
to improve their health outcomes.
00:55
But in order to do that, George understands
that he needs to look beyond the individual.
00:59
We have to look at the
community context.
01:02
We have to understand those
community level factors
that challenge one's ability to
take control over their own health.
01:09
And that's where health promotion
frameworks come into play.
01:13
Health Promotion frameworks give us
structures that we can collect data
so we can understand what happens
at the individual level.
01:20
We can understand what happens at that
community level and then we can develop
interventions that meet the specific needs
of our patients or our populations.
01:30
There are wide variety of
Health Promotion frameworks,
but George is planning out the
most commonly referenced ones.
01:36
We have the social ecological
model, the health belief model,
the transtheoretical model, the social cognitive
theory, and the theory of plan behavior.
01:47
Now, each of these health promotion frameworks
are unique, but they all have the same end goal,
to empower individuals to be able to
take control over their own health,
but these frameworks get us
there in a different path.
02:00
I recorded a video for each of
the Health Promotion frameworks.
02:04
I encourage you to listen to all 5 videos and start to take
note of the similarities and the differences between them.
02:11
Also, start to consider when George may
choose to use one of them over the other.
