Vascular malformations are disorders of vascular development associated with a wide variety of clinical presentations. They are challenging both to diagnose and to treat. It is important to properly diagnose vascular malformations because of their distinct differences in morbidity, prognosis, and treatment. At times, vascular malformations can be associated with underlying diseases or systemic syndromes, and they may themselves lead to manifestations of systemic disease. These syndromes often share distinct clinical characteristics and can sometimes be identified on the basis of the flow characteristics of the associated vascular malformation.
