CNS - Pharmacology

by Pravin Shukle, MD

The pharmacology of the central nervous system (CNS) encompasses all drug groups that have an effect on the neuroconduction of the brain and spinal cord. These include sedative hypnotics; anesthetics and opioid analgesics, commonly used in anesthesiology; antidepressants and antipsychotics, commonly used in psychiatry; and muscle relaxants, antiseizure, and movement disorder medications, commonly used in neurology.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the previously mentioned drug groups, as well as their applications.

For optimal comprehension, the student is required to have a previous understanding of molecular and cell biology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and physiology of the CNS, with an emphasis on neuroconduction, presynaptic and postsynaptic receptors, and neurotransmitters.
