Pathology in the veins, especially deep vein thrombosis (DVT) leading to pulmonary embolism, can prove catastrophic. Therefore, it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of DVT and pulmonary embolism as provided via patient history, physical exam signs, laboratory studies, and proper imaging evaluation, when indicated.
The lymphatic vascular system plays several important roles in the body, including immune surveillance, absorption of dietary fat, and regulation of tissue pressure. This system likely contributes to diseases such as the metastasis of cancer, inflammatory disorders, and lymphedema. Though disorders specifically affecting the lymphatic system (e.g. autoimmune disease, lymphatic malformations) are fairly rare, they often have fairly characteristic presentations of which physicians should be aware.
