Reproductive Pharmacology

by Pravin Shukle, MD

Reproductive pharmacology refers to the groups of drugs used for the management of pathologies affecting the genitourinary (GU) tracts of men and women. The male and female GU tracts are regions specialized for reproduction via natural insemination. These tracts can be compromised in a variety of ways, including agenesis or malformation of structures, glandular dysplasia, and malignancy.

In this course, the discussion will be focused on hormonal medications, including estrogens and anti-estrogens, progestins and antiprogestins, and androgens and antiandrogens.

For optimal comprehension, the student should be familiar with the anatomy, embryology, and physiology of the GU tract, with an emphasis on gonadal hormonal products and their effects throughout the body.
