    00:01 Welcome.

00:02 In this lecture, we will be discussing the anatomy and physiology of the heart.

00:08 First, the heart is a transport system that consists of two side-by-side pumps.

00:17 On the left side of the heart, we're going to be receiving oxygenated blood that is returning from the lungs This is going to pump blood to the body's tissue by way of the systemic circuit.

00:32 On the opposite side or the right side of the heart, we're going to be receiving oxygen-poor blood that is returning from the body's tissue and here we're going to pump that blood to the lungs so that we can get rid of the carbon dioxide that has been picked up by the tissues and we're going to pick up oxygen from the atmosphere.

00:55 This is going to be our pulmonary circuit.

00:58 There are four chambers in the heart.

01:01 Two of these chambers are referred to as our receiving chambers.

01:06 They include the left atrium which is going to receive blood from the pulmonary circuit that has just been oxygenated.

01:14 and then we have the right atrium which is going to receive blood that is returning from the body's tissue by way of the systemic circuit.

01:23 This blood has been deoxygenated.

01:27 The next chambers are the pumping chambers.

01:31 The left ventricle is going to pump blood through the systemic circuit and this blood is going to be oxygenated blood.

01:40 And the right ventricle is going to pump deoxygenated blood through the pulmonary circuit so that it may pick up oxygen from the atmosphere.
