Psychiatric Assessment

by Helen Farrell, MD

The goals of a general psychiatric assessment are to collect objective data that supports a diagnosis and to determine whether that diagnosis requires treatment. The assessment is the first step in creating a treatment plan or assessing the need for immediate intervention, as well as identifying any longer-term issues that require follow-up care.

There are key portions of the assessment that cannot be missed (e.g., a suicide risk screen) and other parts that can may require art and tact (e.g., the mental status exam and taking the history of a patient with an active psychiatric illness). Any patient that walks into a physician’s office may carry a psychiatric diagnosis or undiagnosed condition that affects care they are to receive. It is important for every physician to be aware of these diagnoses and conditions to best care for their patients.
