The postpartum period begins soon after the delivery of the baby. It can last from around six to eight weeks, and it is defined as ending when the mother’s body has largely returned to its physiologic state pre-pregnancy. This period is very important for the short- and long-term health, as well as the well-being, of both the mother and her baby. During the postpartum care visit, it is important to counsel the mother and family on family planning and infant care, encourage breastfeeding, and screen for new medical conditions common in the postpartum period. It is likewise important to monitor for preexisting or chronic medical conditions.
