00:01
Hello! Today, we’re going to talk
about the lower GI secretions.
00:06
Here, we are going to have a
few different learning goals.
00:09
The first is the constituents of
mechanisms of pancreatic secretions
and how these glands are
controlled and regulated.
00:16
Our second goal will be to also know the
constituents of the biliary secretions,
how bile is stored, and how
it is released and regulated.
00:27
Finally, we will understand how cystic
fibrosis transmembrane regulators,
which are abbreviated CFTR,
how they are applied in the GI system
and how this works in the formation of
the pathophysiology of cystic fibrosis,
which is important in terms of one
our pathophysiological mechanisms.
00:52
So let’s start off with
pancreatic secretions.
00:54
The pancreatic secretions will occur
or dump into the small intestine.
01:00
The pancreas is a very large organ
and it’s the pancreatic duct
that primarily will lower or
release its substances
into the small intestine.
01:12
The pancreas is made up of two
different endocrine kind of glands.
01:16
The pancreatic islets are going
to be the alpha and beta cells
that are involved with insulin
and glucagon secretion.
01:24
And those are not what we’re
going to talk about today.
01:27
Today, we’re going to talk about the
exocrine portions of the pancreas.
01:30
This will secrete digesting
enzymes, water, and bicarbonate.
01:37
So why do we need to
secrete these substances?
Well, because we need to undergo digestion
of carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
01:46
And we will talk through the
enzymes that are responsible
for each of those particular
digestive processes.
