Movement Disorders

by Carlo Raj, MD

Movement disorders are a heterogeneous collection of neurological conditions that cause an increase or decrease (reduction or slowing) in movement. These movements may be voluntary but are commonly involuntary. Symptoms include those seen in disorders like Parkinson disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, Wilson disease, and Huntington disease. Many of these diseases are difficult to treat—often secondary to disease progression or medication side effects—so patients require long-term follow-up and counseling with their physician.
