00:01 So now let's have a look at some key differences between the male and the female pelvis.

00:06 So on the screen we can see pictures of a male and a female pelvis.

00:11 We can see in the male the great pelvis is that much deeper than the female, which is shallower.

00:17 For the lesser pelvis, in the male it is narrower compared to a slightly wider one in the female.

00:23 The pubic arch is also narrower within the male compared to being wider in the female.

00:29 The sacral promontory is much more pronounced within the male compared to the sacral promontory in the female, which is less pronounced.

00:36 The pelvic inlet is heart shaped in the male, and it's circular within the female.

00:42 And the pelvic outlet is relatively smaller compared to the larger pelvic outlet in the female.

00:48 Now, as you can imagine, the main reason for these anatomical differences due to child development and childbirth.

00:54 Increased space within the pelvic region for the female is key to allow the developing fetus to grow.

01:01 And then as that fetus passes through as a born baby that passes out into the wider world, obviously, we need to have a greater size that enables the vaginal canal to expand and allow that baby to pass through during childbirth.

01:15 So some key anatomical differences there between the male and the female pelvis.
