Making an Occupied Bed (Nursing)

00:04 Now that we've prepared our client for changing our bed, this is a great time just to go ahead and loosen and remove any of these top linens and also these corners and this will help just maintain privacy and warmth for as much as possible, when we're changing the client's bed.

00:20 And, of course, if it'll possible, if the client can lay on their back in the supine position that would be ideal.

00:27 So, let me go ahead and loosen this up now.

00:30 Just take in each corner, loosening everything up.

00:40 Now, a couple of things to note.

00:43 It's ideal if you could have a friend.

00:45 Now, when I roll my client to the side, it's really nice to have Dean there to help support the client.

00:51 Now, here's really important point to note, to assess your client's ability.

00:55 Sometimes, we have to change an occupied bed alone, but you've got to make sure this is safe for your client.

01:02 Some clients are able to roll to the side and hold on to the siderail just fine, but, again, it's important to assess your client for safety.

01:11 And, again, it's always more fun and easier with a friend.

01:14 So now, when we role our client to one side, Dean's going to help support them and then we're going to change out the dirty linen.

01:20 Alright. So, ready. Perfect. Thank you, Dean.

01:24 So now that Dean supported our patient, I'm going to take all of the dirty linen.

01:29 So this is where we're going to kind of roll it, if you will, and we're going to make sure we roll all these and tuck this underneath our client.

01:38 Now, here's a really important point to note, that the more you tuck underneath the patient physically, the easier it's going to be for Dean to be able to pull it out on the other side.

01:49 Now, when I say pull it out, be really conscious that we're not pulling like this and shearing the patient's skin.

01:55 So, again, I'm just going to create a tight roll and tuck as much as possible.

02:02 So this is our dirty linen.

02:04 So here's the important point, now, we're going to get our new clean linen and we're going to put the new stuff on the bed that's empty.

02:11 So because I've touched dirty linen, I'm going to go ahead and perform hand hygiene and change out my gloves.

02:52 Okay. As we're getting our new gloves on, Now this is when we're going to get the clean linen on the empty side of the bed.

02:59 So here's something also to think about, sometimes your patient has quite an incontinent episode or the linen's really soiled in the bed, sometimes, you may need to clean the bed in between bed linen change so just keep that in mind as well.

03:13 So now that we've done this, I'm going to go ahead and grab my bottom sheet, and this is our clean linen. I'm going to open this up.

03:24 Now, this particular skill, obviously, is really handy when a client is unable to get physically out of the bed themselves.

03:36 So, I'm just going to secure the corners on my side and lay it flat like it would be laying it flat against the bed, we're just laying out so making sure I get the right corners on my side.

03:50 So, here's a little thing that I like to do, we just makes it all a little bit more neat.

03:55 When I take my bottom sheet, I like to stack everything on top of it, so I'm going to put this over the client.

04:03 Then I'm going to take the absorbent pad or excuse me, actually, I'm going to take my draw sheet, which is what we help to move up the client in bed.

04:13 I'm just going to stack all my clean linen on top of each other.

04:36 Now, when I position these, it's important to make sure that I put ample on this side when they pull it out from the other side of the bed, because Dean's going to have to get to these clean linens later.

04:48 Then I'm going to place my absorbent pad as well on top of the linens, cuz this is what's going to go physically underneath the patient.

04:56 So, again, you notice, I don't have it all the way to the edge, I have it a little bit more this way cuz it's going to make sure, when the patient rolls, there's plenty that Dean can grab to pull through.

05:07 Okay, so now that I've got these position this is what I just like to do, is just tuck neatly, kinda make it a tight roll of everything cuz it's going to keep everything together when Dean needs to access these linens.

05:23 And also why it's really helpful to have your friend here for support.

05:28 And, again, you see me here, I just got everything in a nice roll.

05:33 Just keep in mind your friend's going to have to get to it.

05:37 Then I'm going to take my clean and tuck it underneath the dirty.

05:41 So I'm going to kinda lift the old stuff, tuck my clean stuff underneath.

05:49 So now that I've tucked the clean underneath the dirty, and Dean has support of the patient, I'm going to go ahead and put my side rail up for safety, so when the client rolls this way, they can have something to hold on to, as well.

06:03 Okay, go ahead and lay him back, Dean.

06:06 Thank you so much. If you don't mind helping me roll him over, thank you, perfect. Alright.

06:16 Now, at this point, when I'm supporting the client, Dean is actually going to take all of the dirty linen out.

06:22 Now, it's really important that for infection control purposes, that you put this in the appropriate receptacle.

06:28 And, again, agency policy varies, but make sure you check yours.

06:31 So once he's disposed of the dirty linen, he needs to remove the old gloves, he's going to perform hand hygiene and he's going to don on new ones for the clean linen.

06:42 Thanks, Dean. And as you can see, Dean is just pulling the corners and the linen through from the other side.

06:51 Now, the nice thing, as you can see, as long as you tuck an ample amount of linen on the other side, it's very easy for Dean to access, and he's going to make sure that he adjust the bottom sheet, make sure we remove any wrinkles which is really important for skin protection, and then once we're ready, we're going to position the client for comfort.

07:19 Okay, now once we've done the bottom, we're going to replace the rest of the linen.

07:25 We can take off that dirty, put on our new top sheet, and put on our new blanket.

07:38 And, of course, many times the pillow actually gets neglected, so make sure that you replace the client's pillow case as well.

07:54 Okay, thank you. Now when we're making this bed, sometimes, people tucked the corners into the bed.

08:01 Make sure you check with the client, sometimes, it actually kinda traps the patient's feet into the bed so when they go to get up, this could be a potential fall risk, so make sure you check with your client, assess appropriately.

08:19 Now and finally, before you leave the client's bedside, of course, don't forget to put the bed in the lowest position.

08:28 So we're going to do this for safety and, of course, make sure your siderails are up, and to address the patient's need, don't forget that all important call light within the patient's reach and the personal belongings.
