Ischemic Heart Disease

by Richard Mitchell, MD, PhD

Coronary artery disease is an increasingly common cardiac condition defined by the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaque within coronary vessel lumens. This leads to impairment in blood flow and oxygen delivery to the myocardium, which in turn leads to ischemic heart disease.

Ischemic heart disease can present in a number of ways, from acute myocardial infarction to chronic or stable angina, and eventual heart failure secondary to ischemic remodeling. It is a cause of major morbidity and mortality worldwide. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease, and ideally prevention of ischemic complications, is necessary to prevent the high morbidity and mortality associated with it.
