Importance of Fluids for the Circulation of Blood, Gas Movement, and Gas Exchange

This course covers the material of content category 4B of the official MCAT exam content outline.

Since antiquity, many medical and healing traditions have established a relationship between fluids and the functioning of the human body. Examples include the humoral theory of illness and the importance of water and the other four elements in traditional Chinese medicine. Today, the expansion of our understanding of physics, along with advances in anatomy and physiology, has enabled us to study the mechanics of two important fluids: air and blood (not ignoring lymph). Fluid mechanics applied to physiology falls under the subfield of biophysics, which has allowed us to understand the physical properties of physiological and pathological phenomena.

In this course, students will be introduced to the basics of fluid mechanics as applied to liquids and gases. For optimal comprehension, students are required to have a college-level understanding of physics, chemistry, and calculus.

Thad Wilson, PhD

Dr. Thad E. Wilson is a Professor and Director of Education in the Department of Physiology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, USA.
He obtained his PhD from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.
Not only is he an experienced lecturer with many years of teaching experience, but he has also developed and improved medical curriculums, and served in leadership roles directing Medical Physiology and various organ system courses.
Due to his achievements, Dr. Wilson has been awarded multiple institutional and national medical school teaching awards.
Within Lecturio, Dr. Wilson teaches courses on Physiology.

Jared Rovny, PhD

Dr. Jared Rovny has been a Lecturer at Yale University in Connecticut, USA since 2013.
He obtained his PhD in Physics from Yale University in 2019. He was awarded the D. Allan Bromley Graduate Fellowship in Physics in 2019 and the Princeton Quantum Institute Postdoctoral Fellow in 2020.
Currently, he works with Yale's Center for Teaching and Learning at Yale University.
Due to his achievements, he earned the Yale College Prize Teaching Fellowship for his work in PHYS 171 (University Physics for the Life Sciences).

The video was a great help in making me understand easily on the topic of the gas phase. I think it was very educational for the students who struggles to understand well the topic.
