Histological Techniques and Staining

Histological Techniques and Staining

by Geoffrey Meyer, PhD

Although histological techniques and staining may seem rudimentary, they enable one of our most powerful diagnostic tools: the pathological examination of tissue.

Histological techniques involve the various methods in which tissue may be prepared for microscopic examination, while staining is guided by clinical or pathologic suspicion. A clinician worried about parasitic infection may require a Giemsa stain, whereas basic hematoxylin and eosin may be all that is needed for the diagnosis of a common malignancy.

Regardless, the vast array of tools available to pathologists works best in concert with a clinician who has a general awareness of what options exist.

Builds up from basics. I like that method. I just wish his lectures had maybe a 3-4 speed option.
