Esophageal Disease: Basic Principles with Carlo Raj

Esophageal Disease: Basic Principles with Carlo Raj

by Carlo Raj, MD

The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the pharynx (throat) to the stomach, which contracts to allow food to make its way through the tract. Being quite close to an external environment, as well as to the acidic juices of the stomach, it is susceptible to a number of insults and, therefore, various pathologies (e.g., esophageal cancer, infections, gastroesophageal reflux disease). Not only that, but the contractile motion of the esophagus is subject to dysfunction, leading to motility disorders that impair quality of life. This course covers these disorders and many more.
