Disorders of Vulva, Vagina and Cervix

by Carlo Raj, MD

Many women seek care for vulvar, vaginal, or cervical complaints. There are many benign pathologies that affect the female lower genital tract. Gynecologic infections are especially common. Many reproductive tract infections are sexually transmitted, whereas other common infections are attributable to an overgrowth of the normally present bacteria or yeast in the vagina. Presenting signs and symptoms are helpful for determining the source of infection, but often a battery of tests must be performed to make a definitive diagnosis.

Gynecologic malignancies, too, are extremely prevalent among women worldwide, contributing to the lion’s share of the cancers affecting women. HPV-mediated gynecologic cancers are highly preventable and even curable with screening, vaccination, early detection, and prompt management. Therefore, it is important that physicians are knowledgeable about HPV vaccination and can counsel their patients on receiving the appropriate tests and treatments.

Dr. Raj has this amazing way of highlighting the most important information. I love how he always does a recap of things he'd mentioned in previous lectures to connect them to the current one. Love his work!
