00:00 Here's a 65-year-old diabetic patient with chronic renal failure who's under dialysis therapy but gets sick, fails to come to dialysis for a week because of stomach cramps and diarrhea that developed after eating at a fast food restaurant.

00:16 When she comes finally for her dialysis, they get this ECG.

00:20 What does this ECG show? Notice the pointed T waves that you wouldn't wanna sit on.

00:34 This ECG is diagnostic of hyperkalemia.

00:39 This patient had a serum potassium of 6.9% because they weren't getting dialyzed.

00:45 One of the complications of renal failure is hyperkalemia and one of the things that we do dialysis for is to reduce that serum potassium.

00:53 This patient missed a number of dialysis and consequently, has a serum potassium that's markedly elevated, needs urgent dialysis.

01:02 Thank you very much for being with me for this lecture.

01:06 I look forward to being with you on the next one.
