00:01
Welcome back everyone.
00:02
As nurses, we experience
challenges everyday.
00:07
I don't think a day would go by that you are not going
to use one of the most important skills that you possess:
Problem solving.
00:15
Problem solving is defined as a response given
in an important and difficult situation
where critical thinking is
required for a solution.
00:24
Now, there are problem-solving strategies.
00:27
First, identify and define the problem,
Analyze the problem,
Develop solutions,
Analyze and select the best solution,
implement the solution,
and finally, Evaluate the solution.
00:43
Now, let's go into each one
of those a little further.
00:47
When we think about identifying the problem, look
at the problem from a different perspective.
00:53
You really wanna take this opportunity
to take the big picture of you.
00:56
Weed out any factors that are not important and
identify the root cause of the problem if you can.
01:04
Now, as you're analyzing the problem, break down the
problem to get an understanding of its root cause.
01:10
You want to determine how the problem
developed in the first place.
01:15
And then finally, you want to
determine the impact of the problem.
01:18
Who, what people or groups
of people did it affect?
When you move into developing
solutions, you really should brainstorm
and list all of the possible solutions that
focus on resolving the identified problem.
01:32
Don't eliminate any possible solutions at
this stage, they're all good ideas right now.
01:37
Put them on paper.
01:39
Then you want to move into
selecting the best solution.
01:43
Take a look at the list of possible
solutions that you've identified
and find the advantages and the
disadvantages of each solution.
01:51
Then, determine how the solution that you've
identified, all or each one that you have identified,
how each one of them possibly
resolve the problem.
02:00
Now, as you're selecting which one you
want, ask yourself these questions,
What are the short-term and long-term
disadvantages and benefits of each solution?
Which solution might
help you meet your goal?
Now, it's time to
implement the solution.
02:16
This is where you begin by
creating a plan of action.
02:19
You want to decide how you're gonna
move forward with your decision
by determining the steps you're gonna take to
make sure you stay in a forward trajectory.
02:27
And then finally, you're going to
actually execute your plan of action.
02:32
As we do with anything that we do in
nursing, we are gonna evaluate the solutions
so monitor your decision and assess
the results of the solution.
02:41
Ask yourself these questions:
Are you satisfied with the results?
Did your solution resolve the problem?
Actually, did it produce
maybe a new problem?
Do you have to modify your solution
to achieve even better results?
Are you closer to
achieving your goal?
And very important, what have you
learned through the process?
So remember, problem solivng skills
are the most important skills
used in determining, practicing and evaluating
nursing care for sick or healthy individuals.
03:14
So, what did we learn today?
Begin the problem-solving process
by closely looking at the problem
and dismiss any factors that are
not truly relevant to the issue.
03:25
Break down the problem to
really understand it better.
03:28
Then brainstorm and list out all the possible solutions
that focus on resolving the identified problem.
03:35
Then list and review the advantages and disadvantages
of each solution that you've come up with.
03:41
Create and execute a plan of action.
03:45
And finally, monitor your decision and
assess the results of your solution.
03:50
I hope you've enjoyed this
video on problem solving.
