Key Considerations of Communication (Nursing)

00:00 Welcome back everyone. The topic of today's video is Communication in Nursing. Communication is a process by which meaning is assigned to the needs, feelings, perceptions, and interpretation of what is brought to our awareness. Now there are some common communication definitions or actually types or styles of communication. The first one is interpersonal. This is where 2 or more individuals come together face to face to have a conversation. Each party is aware of what's going on. Another one is nonverbal. Nonverbal is a form of communication where the recipient actually can see what the sender is giving with nonverbal clues. For example, if you're really interested in someone's conversation at dinner, you might lean in or lean a little forward or maybe if you're resistant to what they're talking about you might cross your arms or feel a little guarded. Another one is verbal, again, the opposite of nonverbal. This is actually articulating or speaking how you feel.

01:03 Then there is a type called persuasion. Persuasion is a communication style where the intent of the sender is to actually change or modify the behavior of the recipient. Another one is negotiation. Negotiation is a communication style where each party kind of gives and takes a little bit until they come together to a common goal. And the final one is bargaining. Bargaining is a little different than negotiation in that each party actually does a counter, an offer, and a counter offer to each other until you finally reach a resolution. Now there are some key considerations to communication. First and foremost, effective communication is the key to preventing medical errors. Effective communication actually contributes to patient and staff satisfaction because they are able to contribute and talk to their care providers and actually participate in their plan of care. Now individual, team, and group communication is influenced by the organizational climate and culture so it's important for an organization to adopt a healthy work place environment so that the staff and the nurses and everyone feels safe expressing their ideas and their emotions. Now proficiency in verbal and nonverbal and written communication is a key leadership quality. And again, strong communication skills do require practice, it requires experience, being assertive, and confidence. Now nurses need to be able to feel safe enough to articulate their needs, their view points and ideas for the improvement of healthcare and the work environment which is why it's really important for organizations to adopt a healthy work environment for everyone to feel safe expressing those needs and desires. So here's a great example.

03:02 Susan's patient, Nancy, seems a little resistant when she offers her a bath and to assist her with her activities of daily living. Now, she knows that Nancy's daughter and her granddaughter are coming to visit before lunch so she reminds Nancy of this and she comments how much better she would feel during her visit with the family after she has gotten ready for the day. Nancy agrees and she allows Susan to help. So what type of communication style did Susan use? Did she use interpersonal, nonverbal, verbal, persuasion, negotiation, or bargaining? If you chose persuasion, you're right. In this instance, she went to Nancy and she actually gave her some reasons to why she should participate in her activities of daily living which would make her feel better and she was able to convince her to participate in the activity. Remember, communication in nursing is essential to patient safety, health, and well-being. Without effective communication skills, serious errors that might cause patients their lives can occur. So to conclude, what are 3 ways? Effective communication support quality in healthcare? It supports prevention of medical errors, it supports staff and patient satisfaction, and it also contributes to a healthy work environment by allowing the expression of ideas and emotions.
