Ethics is the field of study that focuses on moral principles. Since the inception of medical practice, it has been guided by ethics, based on the proposition that all human life has inherent value and must be preserved. Therefore, all actions taken by a healthcare professional must be congruent with the curing of illnesses and advocacy for the patient’s best interests. Research ethics are derived from these core principles, ensuring that research is carried out with the end goal of finding the best methods to treat illness without endangering the life of any individual.
In this course, the student will be given a walkthrough of the most important milestones in the history of medical and research ethics in the last century.
For optimal understanding, the student is required to be familiar with the core principles of medical ethics. Further reading on the history of the historical events and documents mentioned in the course is highly encouraged.
