Ovarian Diseases

by Carlo Raj, MD

Ovarian disorders encompass any disease affecting the ovary, the female reproductive organ capable of producing eggs. Most often, these disorders are benign and found incidentally, including etiologies like ovarian cysts and benign neoplasms. Still, they can cause symptoms secondary to mass effect, torsion, or hormonal dysregulation.

Malignancy, too, as in the case of ovarian cancer, is always on the differential. Ovarian cancer is a serious diagnosis, often diagnosed late and without good screening tools. Understanding the subtleties of presentations of ovarian cancer could prove life-saving, as some symptoms should serve as red flags biasing away from benign pathology. A detailed understanding of these red flags, as well as the various etiologies of ovarian disorders and their natural progression, assist in proper counseling and management.
