Optic Pathology

by Richard Mitchell, MD, PhD

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine concerned with studying the structure, function, and diseases of the eye. It relies on the previous comprehension of the anatomy and physiology of the related structures, including the eyelid, lacrimal apparatus, extraocular muscles, ocular globe, and visual pathway.

A solid grasp of these structures allows for the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of dozens of conditions. Likewise, mastery of the medications used within this field is crucial. Physicians must be familiar with the basic concepts of ophthalmology and common ocular pathologies since complaints related to the eyes, such as redness, pain, and changes in visual acuity, are very frequent in clinical practice.
