Musculoskeletal Physiology

by Thad Wilson, PhD

Musculoskeletal physiology describes the processes required for the actuation of the bony lever and pulley systems that enable voluntary movement and locomotion. The most important of these is muscle contraction, which is not only very powerful but also heavily regulated by the nervous system.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the basics of bone structure, function, and remodeling; the regulation of calcium and phosphorus; muscle contraction; the types of muscle fibers; and the concept of the motor unit.

For optimal comprehension, the student must have a preliminary understanding of molecular and cellular biology, emphasizing biochemistry, and the histology of the different types of muscle tissue. The parallel study of the anatomy of the nervous system is encouraged.

I love Dr. Wilson's lectures because his explanations are easy to understand even though he attacks very complex topics.
