Glomerulonephritis

by Carlo Raj, MD, Mohammad Hajighasemi-Ossareh, MD

Glomerulonephritis refers to a group of heterogeneous diseases linked by a common mechanism of immune-mediated basement membrane damage. The immunologic damage may also extend to the capillary endothelium or mesangium, leading to hematuria, proteinuria, and azotemia. Acute glomerulonephritis can be classified as either primary renal disease or renal manifestations secondary to an underlying illness. Regardless of the specific etiology, all forms of glomerulonephritis involve immune-mediated damage that relies on the activation of both humoral and cell-mediated pathways. The subsequent inflammatory cascade results in progressive fibrosis and ensuing complications.

The lectures are pretty good but many of the ddx are dependent on the histo, EM, IM, etc findings. PLEASE provide a pointer for future lectures. Simply describing what we should be seeing is not as helpful - it's difficult to follow along.
