Disorders of the Peritoneum

Disorders of the Peritoneum

by Kelley Chuang, MD

Disorders of the peritoneum refer to illnesses that affect the peritoneum, the inner lining of the abdominal cavity, also called the peritoneal cavity. The most prominent of these, especially in general surgery, is an acute abdomen, an irritation of the peritoneum that largely indicates the need for urgent surgical intervention.

In this course, the student will be given a walkthrough of the most common disorders of the peritoneum seen in clinical practice.

For optimal comprehension, the student is required to have preliminary knowledge of the anatomy, histology, physiology, and pathology of the peritoneum.
