Development of the Abdominopelvic Region

by Peter Ward, PhD

The abdomen contains the organs of digestion, including the GI tract and its accessory glands (e.g., liver and pancreas), the adrenal glands, the kidneys and ureters, and the lymphoid organs in the form of the spleen and lymph nodes. The adjacent pelvic cavity harbors the final segments of the GI tract and the internal reproductive organs. Notable for the intricacy of its architecture, the abdomen serves as the site of development of major organs involved in digestion and the absorption of nutrients, overall homeostasis, and reproduction.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the development of the GI tract and its adjacent organs, the GU tract, and external genitalia. Along the way, diseases arising from developmental processes going awry will be discussed.

For optimal comprehension, the student will be required to have preliminary knowledge of molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry, with an emphasis on cell division and gene expression. Parallel study of the anatomy and physiology of the GI and GU tracts is highly encouraged.
