Cardiovascular Emergencies and Shock

by Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death and generally ranks as the most prevalent type of disease worldwide. Unfortunately, it often presents in emergency situations. One of the more terrifying conditions is an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, leading to an over 90% mortality rate. Even among patients who are resuscitated on time and have spontaneous circulation restored, many develop cardiogenic shock requiring multimodal therapy and leading to multiorgan failure. Thus, the cornerstone of cardiovascular emergency management has colloquially rested in the adage “time is gold,” as prompt treatment is essential for reducing mortality.

This section will cover the categorization, evaluation, and management of shock, including an in-depth look at a few of the basic medications that can be used to treat shock based on the suspected etiology. At some point in training, nearly every physician will need to learn how to manage an acutely decompensating patient, or else a friend or relative with chest pain. Regardless of the field you pursue, a sound grasp of these conditions will prove useful in patient care.

NOPE
By Laura . on 15. October 2023 for Sepsis and Septic Shock: Pathophysiology & Clinical Definition

Not a good educator and lecture presenter. A lot going on that is boring and nonstimulating. Easy to get lost, tune out, and loose focus. Not engaging.
