Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)

by Craig Canby, PhD

The ANS is the part of the peripheral nervous system that helps to regulate many involuntary physiologic processes, such as respiration, digestion, heart rate, and vascular tone (blood pressure). It has three divisions—enteric, sympathetic, and parasympathetic—that are anatomically and functionally distinct. Pathology of the autonomic nervous system can lead to such pathology as Horner syndrome, blocking the sympathetic flow to the face and leading to a distinct clinical presentation.

not clear enough
By DEFNE K. on 08. June 2023 for Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): Output and Thoracolumbar Outflow

not clear enough, should be improved. slides can be more schematic or include mnenomics or at least make it more interesting by adding more facts

Straight to the point.
By Emma K. on 31. December 2022 for Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): Output and Thoracolumbar Outflow

Simple and concise explanation. Covered all necessary aspects without elaborating too much on details.

Excellent Overview of PNS
By Daryl T. on 18. September 2021 for Parasympathetic Nervous System (PSNS)

I'm a first year medical student and the lectures that we have had on the autonomics have not been clear or understandable at all. The set of lecture materials and the lectures that Lecture has provided has GREATLY increased my understanding and made my exam prep much easier.

Great!
By Camila F. on 17. April 2021 for Overview of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)

Easy to understand. Loved the colors used to distinguish sympathetic from parasympathetic, that really helped.
