ANS - Pharmacology

by Pravin Shukle, MD

The pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) encompasses all drug groups that have an effect on the neuroconduction of the segments of the nervous system specialized for the autonomic control of visceral motility and secretions.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the pharmacology of sympathomimetic agents, adrenergic blockers, cholinomimetic activators, and anticholinergic agents.

For optimal comprehension, the student is required to have a previous understanding of molecular and cell biology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and the anatomy and physiology of the ANS, with an emphasis on its organization, its major nerves and the organs they innervate, its receptors, and its major neurotransmitters.
