Acute Care

by Charles Vega, MD

In medicine, we are taught to look at a patient and adjudge them to be sick or not sick. In an acute setting, though, this is often quite challenging. Many patients with acute illness may look distressed while their underlying pathology is more benign (e.g., a sprained ankle). Others may appear fine but are hiding a more sinister pathology (e.g., the lucid interval of an epidural hematoma). Therefore, before moving on in an acute situation, it is prudent to ask what pathologies a patient might be harboring that can kill them, as well as to keep a broad differential locked away for these scenarios.
