Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment

By Kimberly Posey, AGPCNP-BC, DNP, PhD, GS-C

The comprehensive geriatric assessment is a systematic approach to evaluating the health status, functional capabilities, and circumstances of elderly patients. A solid foundation in internal medicine and physical examination techniques is essential before undertaking this subject, as students must be able to distinguish between normal aging processes and pathological conditions. With an aging global population, mastery of geriatric assessment has become fundamental to medical practice across all specialties, bridging the gap between basic medical knowledge and effective clinical care of older adults.
