Some agents, whether natural or synthetic, can have deleterious effects when put in contact with tissues. These effects can range from the intoxication sought after with abuse substances to the malignancy brought about by asbestos inhalation. Toxicology is an area that focuses on the study of harmful substances and their effects, and toxi-pharmacology deals with describing the pharmacological parameters of these compounds. These substances are ever present in the modern world—psychoactive drugs peddled on the streets, job site exposure to chemicals, and carcinogens, among others.
In this course, the student will be introduced to the toxi-pharmacology of the most important drugs of abuse and toxic substances.
For optimal comprehension, the student is required to have a previous understanding of molecular and cell biology and physiology, with an emphasis on liver metabolism and clearance by the kidney.
